excerpt from Mirror Breaker

----When we were little, my brother and I made monster faces at one another. It was a game we played at the edge of the pond behind our house, amidst cattails and mosquitoes. We pulled lips and twisted ears, our self-inflicted deformities reflected in the ripples of the water's surface. The challenge was of course to frighten one another, but instead we laughed and laughed until he splashed water, stinging my eyes, and I chased him around the pond. Then I got the idea for my most fearsome face yet, rolling my eyes back into my head and pulling my eyelids inside out. He stopped laughing and started to cry. After that day, my brother Chase never wanted to play the game again, and because he was older, we never did.
